7-30-14 Aircraft Battery Capacity Test Adjustment – Concorde Battery Tech Bulletin No. 14

West Covina, CA - Concorde Battery Corporation`s Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) 5-0171 states that Capacity Check intervals are general recommendations suitable for most applications. The intervals may be adjusted for a specific aircraft or fleet once the average battery life is established. How does one establish the average battery life?

Concorde has released Technical Bulletin No. 14 - “Capacity Check Interval Adjustment” available at www.concordebattery.com. This bulletin gives guidance on how to establish average battery life and adjust capacity test intervals in accordance with that life. Capacity tests are the only accurate means of quantifying a battery`s state of health and verifying airworthiness. A battery capacity of 80% or more is considered airworthy by the FAA and is required in order to supply essential power in the event of an alternator or generator failure. Aircraft that are flown under the same environmental conditions, follow the same operating patterns and are configured with the same electrical systems can extend their capacity test intervals based on previous battery life.

This Technical Bulletin walks you through proper methodology for accurately adjusting the capacity check schedule. A full copy of the Technical Bulletin is available at: http://www.concordebattery.com/otherpdf/TB14.pdf

7-29-14 Concorde Battery Higher Power RG-380E/46 Series Batteries Receive TSO Approval: Drop in replacement for RG-380E/44 Series

West Covina, CA - Concorde Battery Higher Power RG-380E/46 Series Batteries Receive TSO Approval:
Drop in replacement for RG-380E/44 Series

RG 380E 46AConcorde Battery Corporation announces TSO approval of the RG-380E/46 battery series. The RG-380E/46 series batteries have more power at the same weight and in the same dimensions as the popular RG® Series RG-380E/44 batteries. Concorde is continuously working on developing longer lasting and more powerful Sealed Lead Acid Batteries and through Research and Development produced a battery the same size and weight as the RG-380E/44 with higher capacity and more instantaneous power. This direct replacement supplies 10% more power at 46 Ah than the 42 Ah RG-380E/44. When used in the same application, the RG-380E/46 will last longer (due to a lower depth of discharge on engine start), cause less engine wear (due to more cranking power), and provide more essential power in the event of an alternator failure allowing more time to safely land the aircraft. Obtaining TSO approval was the first step toward updating STCs that incorporate the RG-380E/44 to include this higher power solution. Revised STCs for the superior RG-380E/46 battery should be available in the near future.

8-21-13 EASA ESTC for Single & Dual Lead Acid Battery Installation onEurocopter AS350 B, BA, B1, B2 & B3

West Covina, CA - Concorde is pleased to announce that Airlift AS of Norway has received EASA approval for ESTC 10044362 allowing for single and dual battery installations of Concorde’s Sealed Lead Acid RG-350 or RG-355 battery on Eurocopter AS350B, -BA, -B1, -B2 and B3 models. The ESTC is now available through Concorde Battery Corporation’s
worldwide network of distributors.

RG 350AsMany cold weather and high cyclic operators have requested a Lead Acid option for use in Europe and Airlift has fulfilled this request with Concorde batteries. For conversions on a single battery installation ESTC 10044362 replaces the main 15 Ah nickel-cadmium battery with either the Concorde RG-350 or the RG-355 17 Ah Lead Acid batteries. If the aircraft has been modified with Eurocopter Service Bulletin 24.00.01 (starting in very cold weather) Airlift’s ESTC allows for the replacement of both Nickel-Cadmium batteries with Concorde RG-350 batteries.

RG-350 and RG-355 are TSO authorized and as such, have passed rigorous TSO C-173 testing for duty cycle, electrical performance, temperature extremes, shock/vibration and environmental requirements. Concorde’s valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) recombinant gas (RG®) absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology has been proven as reliable, durable and safe for over 30 years. Superior performance can be attributed to unique design features such as proprietary PolyGuard® separators (an additional layer of protection against shorting, unique to Concorde) robust plate construction, over the cell wall intercell connections for reduced internal resistance and a commitment to quality standards.

The advantages of converting from nickel-cadmium to Concorde’s RG® Series batteries include lower cost of acquisition, zero maintenance and reduced battery costs per flight hour. Concorde batteries do not require deep cycling to remove the “memory effects” seen in nickel-cadmium batteries, do not require water or electrolyte replenishment and have no risk of thermal runaway. With the benefit of RG® Series batteries shipping Hazmat Exempt, transportation is more cost effective regardless of whether shipping by land, sea or air.

RG 355AsAirlift AS, based at Forde Airport in Bygstad, Norway, is the largest North European domestic helicopter company and the sole Norwegian government contractor for search and rescue. The company is part of the Blueway Group and operates 16 of the group’s helicopters.

In addition to performing design and maintenance on its own helicopters, Airlift has also offered design, installation and maintenance services to other helicopter companies for over 20 years. 8-1-13 Concorde RG-224 Excels in High Cyclic Helicopter Operations

WEST COVINA, CA Concorde designed the RG-224, 24 Ah, RG® Series (recombinant gas) helicopter battery to fulfill a demand for a higher capacity battery on the Bell LongRanger and has received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. Numerous LongRanger operators have converted to the RG-224, using Falcon Crest’s STC SR09069RC, to reduce engine wear and increase battery life.

High cyclic operations are hard on aircraft batteries due to frequent starts with short flight times. This style of operation shortens battery life because there is not enough time in flight for the battery to fully recharge. The two consequences of a partial charge are decreased capacity and shortened battery life.

When a battery is not fully recharged sulfate builds on battery plates. The sections of the plates covered with sulphate are inactive and the battery is unable to provide full cranking capacity on the next demanding start cycle. This decrease in capacity causes unnecessary wear on engine components. Air Ambulance and Oil & Gas fleets experience some of the highest cyclic operations. These operators have responded with surprise at the increased starting power and improved performance experienced after upgrading to the RG-224 packed with 42% more power than RG-222.

Aircraft batteries can be damaged beyond repair when they are discharged below 80% of their capacity. In high cyclic operations the capacity is slightly drained a little more on each start because a full charge is never achieved during a short flight. The higher capacity RG-224 provides more room for discharge before a full charge is required thereby extending battery life.

To extend your battery life and prevent unnecessary wear upgrade to Concorde’s RG-224 in your LongRanger using Falcon Crest STC SR09069RC.

Concorde designs and manufactures over 90 models of Original Equipment and direct replacement batteries for fixed wing and rotary aircraft and has a reputation for designing application specific solutions. 7-31-13 Higher Capacity Battery Now Available for Agusta A119 & AW119 MKII

WEST COVINA, CA- Concorde is pleased to announce recently certified FAA STC SA01703WI to replace the original Nickel-Cadmium or RG-407 battery with the NEW higher capacity RG-427 battery on Agusta A119 and AW119 MKII.

Customers asked and we listened! Fleet customers with high cyclic operations needing more power and extended battery life to increase their efficiencies asked if we could build a higher capacity battery. Concorde’s engineering team answered the challenge by designing the higher capacity RG-427 34 Ah battery delivering an additional 26% of power over the original 27 Ah Nickel-Cadmium battery in a footprint only fractionally larger than the RG-407. This makes the RG-427 a “Drop in Replacement” for either the original Nickel Cadmium or Concorde’s RG-407 (installed with STC SR09360RC).

Development of the new RG-427 is a perfect example of reaching solutions by collaborating with customers. Concorde has a reputation for designing application specific solutions and is proud to have successfully grown market share by responding to customer and aircraft manufacturer’s design requests. Concorde’s AW-139 / AB-139 STC was also accomplished by customer request. Users have been very pleased with the higher capacity battery on the AW-139 and AB-139 and the same results are expected from the RG-427 on the Agusta A119 and AW119 MKII.

RG-427 is FAA - TSO authorized and constructed with Concorde’s cutting edge and proven Recombinant Gas RG®, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) maintenance free technology. Our superior lead acid performance can be attributed to unique design features such as proprietary PolyGuard® separators (an additional layer of protection against shorting, exclusive to Concorde) robust plate construction, over the cell wall intercell connections for reduced internal resistance and a commitment to high quality standards. 7-30-13 Concorde Battery Announces New Higher Capacity and Heated RG® Series Batteries

WEST COVINA, CA – Concorde is pleased to have released several NEW Batteries: RG-380E/46, RG-427, RG-641 and the RG-380E/44 heated series.

RG 380E 46RG-380E/46 is a new higher capacity 46 Ah 24 Volt battery in the same envelope size as Concorde’s popular RG-380E/44. RG-380E/46 weighs in at the same weight as the RG-380E/44 making it a higher capacity option without the need for structural modifications or weight and balance adjustments. The battery is TSO approved.

RG 427RG-427, delivering 34 Ah, is a higher capacity version of the popular RG-407 battery produced for high cyclic helicopter operators desiring extended battery life. This powerhouse provides 26% more capacity than the RG-407. RG-427 is certified for installation on Agusta models A119 and A119MKII using Concorde STC SR04007AT now available through distribution. RG-427 is TSO approved.

RG 641RG-641 is a 17 Ah 24 Volt battery designed as a direct replacement in Schweitzer 269 (Hughes 300) applications. TSO and STC approvals are currently in process with expected completion in Q4 2013.

RG 380E heatedConcorde is proud to release a new heated battery line in our popular RG-380E/44 size. The RG-380E/44KH, RG-380E/44KSH, RG-380E/44LH and RG-380E/44LSH, provide optimal performance at cold temperatures when assembled with a Concorde Heater Control Unit (HCU). A heated battery will accept a charge more quickly in cold operating conditions, particularly in instances where a GPU start is used skipping the warming cycle a battery undergoes during engine start. In cold soak conditions, a heated battery will charge faster helping to prevent situations of undercharged batteries that lead to sulfation and shortened battery life.

Concorde sealed lead acid recombinant gas (RG®), absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries are a more economical solution to Ni-Cd batteries with no maintenance requirements and reduced cost per flight hour. Sealed lead acid technology does not have a memory and does not require unique charging equipment. Concorde RG® Series batteries may be serviced in any battery facility, including Ni-Cd service facilities.

7-29-13 Concorde Battery Discontinues CB (Dry Charged) Battery Line

RG CollageWEST COVINA, CA - Concorde’s high standards have resulted in sealed lead acid battery technology that provides more efficiency, more power and more convenience than traditional flooded battery technology. This led to an escalating shift in customer’s preference for a sealed RG® Series battery over the CB flooded battery type. As a result, the decline in flooded battery demand dramatically increased manufacturing costs to produce the CB product line. For years, out of respect to loyal flooded battery customers, Concorde continued to manufacture CB batteries despite decreasing demand and increased costs. As a quality company and after serious consideration, Concorde decided it was in our customer’s best interest to discontinue the CB flooded battery line. This decision was based on the proven superior performance of RG® Series batteries and not wanting to sell an older technology at increased prices.

Concorde understands there are many lead acid battery options for aircraft owners and numerous factors contribute to battery preference. Important factors for all consumers making any purchase are cost and value. The CB series has long been perceived as less expensive when in fact this is not the case. As the demand for flooded batteries has decreased, several CB products are actually more expensive than the more efficient RG® battery counterpart. Additionally, Concorde’s recombinant gas (RG® Series) sealed battery technology produces a superior performing battery with the advantages of being maintenance free and without the risk of corrosive acid spills or gassing. In a RG® Battery more plates are packed tightly into the sealed design which reduces internal resistance and provides greater protection against shock and vibration. The result is longer battery life and significantly more power for faster starts and less stress on the starter.

In 2012, Concorde’s Recombinant Gas (RG®) Sealed Lead Acid Batteries were chosen by The Aviation Consumer as the “Gear of the Year” award winner for Best Aircraft Battery. This endorsement is largely due to the winning results found by The Aviation Consumer when they compared Concorde’s sealed technology batteries to the competition. These comparisons are well documented in, “Aircraft Batteries: Concorde Still Excels” published in September 2011. The Aviation Consumer’s results are an indication of Concorde’s diligence in perfecting the RG® Series Sealed Lead Acid battery product line and recognizing the importance of providing top rate customer service. More general aviation pilots are now flying with Concorde batteries than any other aircraft battery.

Concorde designs and manufactures over 90 models of Original Equipment and direct replacement batteries for fixed wing and rotary aircraft and has a reputation for designing application specific solutions. 7-24-12 Concorde Battery Announces NEW RG-325 The Original Equipment Battery on Robinson`s R66

RG 325Concorde Battery has developed a new lighter weight aircraft battery for turbine applications. The new RG-325 is 25 AH and FAA-TSO authorized. RG-325 was specifically constructed for turbine starting applications with the goal of a lighter weight, durably constructed battery that could sustain multiple turbine engine starts. With this in mind, rather than designing the battery with the typical heavy MS3509 receptacle that also requires a heavy Quick Disconnect connector, it was designed with brass M8 terminals for lighter weight ring terminal connections. This weight reduction also results in cost savings due to the high cost of the MS3509 receptacle.

RG-325 is constructed with Concorde’s same proven technology of robust plates, larger intercell connections for less internal resistance and proprietary PolyGuard® separators (an additional layer of protection against shorts that is unique to Concorde). As with all of Concorde’s RG® Series batteries, RG-325 is maintenance free (doesn’t require the addition of electrolyte or water), aerobatic and factory tested to assure airworthiness and installation readiness. RG-325 has also passed the rigorous requirements of TSO testing to obtain FAA-TSO authorization.

Concorde Battery is pleased to announce Robinson® Helicopter Co. has selected the RG-325 for the R66 Turbine helicopter.

RG 380E 44BWEST COVINA, CA – Concorde’s STC ST03930AT, replaces the nickel cadmium main battery with Concorde’s RG-380E/44 and the nickel-cadmium emergency battery with Concorde’s RG-42. EASA approval (ESTC 10038867) and Transport Canada Approval (5010-0-11-0676) have also been received.

RG-380E/44 and RG-42 for ATR 42 & ATR 72 Series aircraft are plug in replacements for the OE nickel-cadmium batteries. No modification to the aircraft is required.

Concorde’s RG-380E/44 (Original Equipment on many corporate aircraft) and RG-42 are both TSO approved and as such have passed rigorous TSO C-173 testing for duty cycle, electrical performance, temperature extremes, shock/vibration and environmental requirements.

Utilizing valve regulated sealed lead acid recombinant gas (RG®) technology, Concorde’s superior performance can be attributed to unique design features such as proprietary PolyGuard® separators (an additional layer of protection against shorting, exclusive to Concorde) robust plate construction, over the cell wall intercell connections for reduced internal resistance and a commitment to quality standards. Concorde batteries have been proven reliable, durable and safe for over 30 years.

The advantages of converting from nickel-cadmium to Concorde include lower cost of acquisition, zero maintenance and reduced battery costs per flight hour. Concorde batteries do not require deep cycling to remove the “memory effects” seen in nickel-cadmium batteries, do not require water or electrolyte replenishment and have no risk of thermal runaway. With the benefit of RG® Series batteries shipping Hazmat Exempt, transportation is less costly regardless of whether shipping by land, sea or air.

Concorde designs and manufactures over 90 models of Original Equipment and direct replacement batteries for fixed wing and rotary aircraft and has a reputation for designing application specific solutions. Concorde batteries are installed as original Equipment by the majority of aircraft manufactures and adopted by military aircraft operators worldwide.

Manufacturing Military and Commercial TSO, FAA-PMA and OEM certified aircraft batteries for over 30 years.
